In an action packed game on Monday October 24th, The Colonia High Patriots JV Football team took on The JP Stevens Hawks. In an exciting and surprising out turn, the Patriots won by a two touchdown lead of 25 – 7.
With a record of 1-4-1 everything was on the line, to put it another way the Patriots had to win Monday nights game. It was an even match up between the two teams. Going in they knew they were going to have to fight. The game stilled at a score of 8-7 until the end of the third, when the Patriots charged ahead.
The game opened with the Colonia Patriots kicking off to the Hawks. JP Stevens scored a touchdown within the first 3 minutes, and a field goal was kicked in by the Hawks kicker. The Patriots retaliated by keeping them to that score for the rest of the game.
The excitement continued with head to head tough defense by both teams. With multiple fumbles on each side, many incomplete passes and a sac on Colonia Quarterback Eric Hamilton. The Patriots knew that going into the second quarter they would have to step up their game.
Leading into the half fumbles were caused on JP Stevens.Then recovered by JP Stevens after a brutal fight for the pigskin. Next, The ball is then intercepted by Colonia’s Nick Michael and brought to the 25 yd line. Colonia gets ready to drive in for the touchdown. Passed to Mateo Campbell, runs it in for The Patriots first touchdown. Colonia scores the extra point and leads by one (score now 8-7) at the end of the first half.
The game presses on and the defense on both teams put up a valiant fight. But JP Stevens defense begins struggle as quarterback Eric Hamilton throws a 45 yard touchdown pass to Alessandro Nieri. Then the extra point is ran in by Mateo Campbell. Again, the third quarter ends with Colonia on top 16-7.
In the fourth and final quarter, a great game is played by the patriots defense. The patriots Charlie Monoz recovered a possible fumble. Colonia’s Chris Sica had multiple beautiful blocks throughout the game.
Another touchdown puts The Patriots into the lead even further with a score of 25-7. With the ball intercepted by Colonia’s Chris Sica,and a fantastic tackle made by Ian Rogers and Charlie Monzo. The hawks didn’t stand a chance.
In light of the game played, as the last few seconds of the clock tick down, it is clear the winner of this game were the Colonia High Patriots.
Provided that this was an exciting game, it is interesting to learn that many of the JV athletes get some varsity play time as well. Four of these aspiring players include Zach Pereira, Mateo Campbell, Alessandro Nieri, and Charlie Monzo. With this in mind the Colonia High School Patriots truly deserved their win against JP Stevens.
